Who we are

The Mission Statement of the W.A.V. Project is to provide immediate, temporary shelter for the victims of family violence and to prevent further violence, provide educational and counseling resources and transportation to supporting shelters.

Our History

For over 25 years, the W.A.V. Project has been a vital resource for individuals and families affected by domestic violence. Established to address the critical lack of support for abuse victims in Mills County, our organization has grown through dedicated partnerships with local law enforcement, businesses, and volunteers. Despite our rural setting and limited resources, we have continually expanded our services to reach those in need across Mills County and six surrounding counties. Over the years, we have provided shelter, guidance, and hope to countless individuals, empowering them to break free from cycles of abuse and rebuild their lives.

What We Do

Mills County is home to approximately 5,000 residents, many of whom face economic hardships. With 62.1% of children economically challenged and 53.3% considered at risk, our mission is more critical than ever. The W.A.V. Project supports victims of physical, sexual, economic, and verbal abuse through safety planning, security measures, and stabilization efforts. While we predominantly assist women and children, we also provide referrals for male victims. Our services include crisis intervention, shelter or alternate housing, employment opportunities, professional counseling, legal aid, and guidance. Additionally, we help individuals secure housing/relocation, medical care, food, clothing, personal items, transportation, and crime victims’ compensation.

Our work is carried out in close collaboration with local law enforcement, the Criminal and Civil Justice System, and a dedicated team of two part-time staff members and approximately 20 volunteers. Our 24/7 telephone hotline and Ring Security System ensure that help is always available for those in need.

Community Partnerships

The success of the W.A.V. Project is built on strong community support. We are grateful to work alongside the Mills County Ministerial Association, Hill County Community Action Association, Mills County Commissioners Court, local businesses, and committed volunteers. These partnerships enable us to provide essential services and expand our outreach efforts to better serve victims of domestic violence.
